Backpack and bag embroidery patches are engineered for the unique demands of the bag industry — larger sizes than apparel patches, exposure to weather and abrasion, and the need to maintain visual impact even when partially obscured by bag contents shifting the fabric. These are statement pieces, often 80-150mm in size, designed to be seen from across a classroom, airport terminal, or hiking trail.
The construction begins with a thick felt backing (1.5-2.0mm) that provides structural rigidity for large-format embroidery. Lighter backings would allow the patch to curl or distort when sewn onto flexible bag fabrics. We use heavy polyester thread (120 denier minimum) for the embroidery, which creates the bold, chunky texture that defines this category. The thicker thread catches light differently than fine apparel thread, creating a more pronounced visual texture that photographs well for social media and e-commerce product images.
Our merrow border finishing is a distinctive feature of bag patches. The merrow (overlock) stitch creates a raised, rope-like edge around the patch perimeter that serves both aesthetic and functional purposes: it gives the patch a finished, professional appearance, and it provides a durable attachment point for sewing onto bags. For brands and consumers who like to customize their bags with interchangeable patches, we offer hook-and-loop (Velcro) backing as an alternative to permanent sew-on application. Each patch is individually inspected for stitch density, border integrity, and color accuracy. The 10-14 day lead time reflects the additional production time required for large-format embroidery (more stitches = longer machine time) and the hand-finishing of merrow borders.
